“Food Apartheid: the Role of Inequitable Access to Ultra-Processed Foods and Whole Foods in perpetuating Eating Disorders and Health Inequities” with Dr. Kimberly Dennis

Learning Objectives

Objective 1: Attendees will be able to define apartheid and apply this definition to inequalities in food access by type of food, race, and socio-economic status.

Objective 2: Identify how factors such as race and SES are associated with health inequities in type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and eating disorders.

Objective 3: Understand how traditional eating disorder nutritional models presuppose equal food access and develop alternative interventions to All Foods Fit for patients with eating disorders, medical comorbidity and economic deprivation in ways that are culturally attuned, values-based and accessible.

More About Dr. Kim

Dr. Kim is the Chief Medical Officer, CEO and Co-founder of SunCloud Health in the Chicago area and a Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. She is a board-certified psychiatrist who specializes in treating eating disorders, addiction, trauma, and multi-occurring disorders. She maintains a holistic perspective in the practice of psychiatry, incorporating biological, psycho-social, and spiritual approaches into nuanced, individualized treatment plans for patients with complex co-occurring disorders.

Dr. Dennis obtained her medical degree from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine and completed her psychiatry residency training at the University of Chicago Hospitals, where she served as chief resident.

A renowned expert in her field, Dr. Dennis has dedicated much of her career to improving treatments for patients with co-occurring eating disorders and substance use disorders. She is published in the areas of trauma, eating disorders, food addiction, the use of medication with family-based therapy for anorexia nervosa, and gender differences in the development of psychopathology. She also contributes regularly to news networks, such as ABC News and CNN; other national press, including The Huffington Post and Chicago Tribune; and online health communities, such as Web MD.
